Any movies from the German perspective during the war?

Stalingrad was an excellent and brutal movie. The ending was one of the most forlorn endings I’ve seen in any film.

I know Enemy At The Gates did tell the story of a Soviet sniper and their side of the Stalingrad battle, but it also gave a good perspective of the Germans. Sorry if this doesn’t fit with the subject matter.

Regards to all,
Digger

Well it’s a bit off…but I think the best are those film done by the germans where they speak german. These have both been mentioned before Der Untergang(The Downfall) and Stalingrad(also in german but you can find english subtitles or whatever lang) Both great movies I suggest watching.

Heres a 5 minute clip from the movie Staligrad showing a Panzer Grenadiers holding off an advance of T-34’s and what seems to be shock troops (not sure.)

Enjoy!!

thanks, but i find kind of unrealistic.

my stalingrad movie is spoken in english, but the acting is terrible

I have all those movies as well. Have you ever seen “Breakthrough”?

“Breakthrough” (1981) sequel to the movie “Cross of Iron” with Richard Burton taking on the role of Steiner (James Coburn played Steiner in “Cross of Iron”). Also stars Rod Steiger, Robert Mitchum, Michael Parks, Helmut Griem, and Klaus Lowitsch (who also played in “Cross of Iron” as Steiner’s sidekick Unteroffizier Krüger).

Hi everyone,
Im Sourav and in India. A history buff specially the first 50 fifty years of the 20th century, an amazing story of man’s evolution, the road shared by Hitler and Gandhi at the same time with such different perceptions of life that they could have been in diff other planets
Ooops , I am digressing sorry
movies with german perspectives other than the regular ones mentioned which I remember are die brucke, the adventures of Werner Holt,Fassbinder’s Marriage of Maria Braun and the new SophieScholl movie.
Hope this helps

You have "Der Untergang

a good movie indeed. even the few “action scenes” are worth watching. hitler is played by a swiss actor and seems quite realistic to me, maybe the dialect is a bit confusing, since hitler was austrian. but even better than the legions of non-german-actors who shout stupid stuff. in “private ryan” the german sounds like polish try to speak german - you cannot even understand what they try to tell.

there are and were some movies produced for the german television, but I cannot remember all the names. “Die Blechtrommel” is a famous german movie, but not only related to WW2. then there is “dresden”, a cheesy love story, and a good serial (from the 80s I guess) about a family in east-prussia.

I know you asked for movies in color but another great movie that is from the German perspective is Hunde, wollt ihr ewig leben aka Stalingrad: Dogs, Do You Want to Live Forever? It is pretty much the movie that Stalingrad is based on with a lot of the same scenes (or slight variations on them). It is in Black and White but it is a solid movie.

Several German movies about WWII I remember are:
“Die letzte Bruecke” about German troops in the former Yugoslavia. The only star I remember is Maria Schell. (Not to be confused with the well-known “Die Bruecke”)

A very interesting movie was “Canaris” with Otto Hasse

and finally: “Der Artzt von Stalingrad” also starring Maria Schell.

It has been a long time that I saw those movies, and my memory about the stories are no longer too clear in my mind. Except maybe for Der Artzt, for which I also have the book somewhere, written by Heinz Konsalik.

Hey guys, I’m new here, but am fascinated by WWII- have been since I was a kid.

I may have missed it, but I’m surprised nobody mentioned “Mein Krieg!” It’s an excellent documentary from 6 soldiers who carried 8mm cameras all throughout the war and it’s from their perspoective, and it’s really well done. It’s kind of hard to find, but if you can, rent or buy it. You won’t be disappointed.

Also, if you want to read a book, “Steel hearts and Iron coffins” is a great book.
It’s about one man’s perspective from inside a U-boat, namely the U-5-5 in Chicago.
I’ve been obsessed with this wolf, again since I was a kid. I’m 42. So you get the idea.

Definitely get Mein Krieg though.
