Argentine icebreaker catches fire, evacuated. All 296 crew members rescued after naval vessel’s generator malfunctions

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina - The Argentine navy’s icebreaker caught fire in South Atlantic waters off Patagonia, but all of its 296 crew members were safely evacuated, the armed forces high command said Wednesday.
Fire broke out in a generator area of the Almirante Irizar late Tuesday off Puerto Madryn in southern Argentina while returning to its base in Buenos Aires, a communique said.

The accident occurred some 930 miles south of the Argentine capital, and Capt. Guillermo Tarapow ordered the crew to abandon ship in 24 lifeboats when flames became uncontrollable, the statement said.

All were safely picked up hours later by an oil tanker and a fishing vessel that rushed to the area, in chilly South Atlantic waters approximately 40 miles off Puerto Madryn.
The statement did not say what caused the fire and did not report any injuries.
The Almirante Irizar was acquired by the Argentine navy in 1978 and has played key roles in transporting military personnel and scientists to and from bases that Argentina operates in Antarctica. It also has been involved in rescue other missions in the region.

Honestly seeing the fire damage I dont think there was many oportunities to the Almirante Irizar, two frigates were sent to the zone to make some towing attemp.

The Captain Guillermo Tarapow is the only crew wich remain in the Ship. Quite a guy, he had risen above the general mediocrity.

The official bulletin say there is not in danger to sink, but who knows.

Which one is the veteran? The Skipper or the boat?

The icebreaker actually.

That is what i thought.

You had another Ice Breaker, Bahia Paraiso, also during the Falklands that was also used as a Hospital Ship, and Troop ship to bring troops to the Island and ship them off.

She sank in 1989, turning turtle.

The prognosis on the Almirante Irizar looks a little bleak though.

Why were there 296 men onboard ? That’s more than double her normal complement !

That was more like a reinforced transport, I am not sure if was a devoted icebreaker like this.

Because there was a lot of journalist who covered the begining of the antartic campaign, and incidentaly a bunch of people who had won a contest organizated by a TV channel to travel to the Antartic base Vicecomodoro Marambio.

The last news indicates that the fire is out and the ship continue to be towed by a Meko 360 frigate to Bs As . The damage was really serious, it will take several millions to cure it.

Bet the contest winners are well impressed

So they didn’t get to Vicecomodoro Marambio, just Tierra (or in this case Barco) del Fuego.

Actually they did, the ship caught fire in the returning trip.

Fair one, at least they’ll have a damn good story to tell their grandchildren.

They have.

Tomorrow I will move this topic to “Argentinian military”

The hero of the journey capt G. Tarapow. Despite being seaborne the capt used a Marines cammo uniform, funny.
