I couldn’t agree more with jnd2089. Bader was a true inspiration in war and in peace.
I seem to have read (somewhere?) that one of the greater problems with ‘Big Wing’ apart from those already stated, was that when fighters intercepted the bomber fleets in smaller numbers they were enteing a ‘target-rich’ environment, but when there were many of them, they had to look out for each other as much as they did the enemy.
I think that by this time the ‘Vic’ formation had been dropped?
Once, watching Bader being interviewed on TV, I was impressed by Bader when he said something to the effect that he wanted “… to see them burn…who did they think they were coming over here with big black crosses on their machines and dropping bombs on our people…”
