If you have had such an acrimonious relationship with your neighbours is it any wonder that they failed to support you in 1982. Chile obviously saw an opportunity to build an allience with a common ( at the time ) enemy.
Chile did not contribute in any way to the land war on the Falkland Islands where a numerically smaller force defeated a larger dug in defending force.
Chile may have provided a facility to UK special Forces for projected operations within Argentina should the conflict have become protracted however given the speed at which the smaller UK forces rolled up the larger Argentine force the issue becomes moot.

Speaking of poverty, check the economy of Spain and Portugal before joining European Union. Both countries came after 2 dictatorships (Salazar and Franco). Moreover, Eastern European countries came after communists dictatorship. Any similarities in the status of economy???

According to Ken Connor’s book Ghosts, an illustrated story of the SAS, page 184, he mentions that a number of operations took place in the area involving Chile. The ones involving the Sea King are known about, but he also talks on an OP mounted in Chile to observe enemy airfields and report. He also suggests that Chile may not have had full knowledge of these operations.
