My uncle was one of the many civilian casualties in my home town in the Netherlands (near the German border). After the start of Operation Market Garden, one of the dropzones was just a mile away, our town was frequently under German fire. Early November 1944, one such mortar round killed seven people talking after coming out of the church. My Grandmother was in the hospital at that same time. It also got hit, and Grandma suffered severe burns, dying a few months later.
