“Very worrying”, Colonel-General Heinz Guderian, Commander of Second Panzer Army.

“We had nothing comparable”, Major-General F.W. Mellenthin, Chief of Staff of XLVIII Panzer Corps.

“The finest tank in the world”, Field-Marshal Ewald von Kleist, First Panzer Army.

“This tank (T-34) adversely affected the morale of the German infantry”, General G. Blumentritt.

T-34 Tank - The T-34 tank is considered by many experts to be the best designed tank of the war. It gave the German Army a nasty surprise when it was first introduced in 1941 because it was much better than the German Tanks. It was fast, had a powerful gun, sloped armor and was mass produced.

No doubt the T-34 was probably the best mass produced tank of WWII. However, the chassis was designed by _____ Christie (forgot his first name) who was an American.

The Germans referred to the T-34 as the ‘snow leopard’ because it’s wide tracks permitted the T-34 to go just about anywhere, including mud, ice, & snow. The armor of the tank was thick & sloped. However, the early production T-34’s couldn’t penetrate the armor of the German tanks.

The T-34 had a diesel engine which was reliable, easliy manufactured, & maintained as well. Plus, diesel was cheaper to produce than gasoline, & diesel freezes at a much lower temperature than gas tanks. During the batlle of Stalingrad the T-34’s diesel engine would actually turn over in the freezing temperatures, while the Germans couldn’t get their gas engined tanks to crank (I think the roadwheels were made of aluminum or manganese(?) which helped reduce the weight of the tank).

The Panther was developed because of the T-34. During the battle of Kursk Hitler ordered the Panthers deployed knowing full well that they hadn’t worked out all of the bugs. I think the Germans may have lost more Panthers during this battle due to maintenance issues vs. battlefield losses.

Interesting side note, during WWII the US sent the Russians thousands of trucks on the Lend Lease act. While this may seem trivial, the factories that the Russians had that were making trucks were now freed up to make…tanks. Also, we sent them thousands of Sherman tanks. The Shermans were no match for the German tanks & the Russians quickly pulled them back for training & familiarization.

Simply put, the Russians may make crude looking & loose fitting miitary equipment, but whatever they field you can rest assured works in the harshest of environments.

T-34 - best battle field tank of WWII? Probably. Cheap to produce. Cheap to repair. Cheap to fuel. And they were everywhere. How could they go wrong?

I would say that the T-34 was the best medium tank during WW2.

Русский T-34/85 резервуар не был то, что мощный, но это была достаточная сила, чтобы выдвинуть немецкую возможность защиты
Russian T-34/85 the tank was not that powerful, but it there was a sufficient force to put forward a German opportunity of protection In English.

It also radically improved the Russian logistic system, as from memory the US trucks were better designed and more reliable than the Russian trucks of the time.
Allegedly (I don’t have a proper source on this - it’s secondhand off another forum, but the guy is usually right) the Russian frontline soldiers thought the “GMC” on the front of the trucks stood for “Kill More Germans”. A sentiment which in the circumstances I thoroughly agree with.

Actually the only homebuilt truck of the Soviets was a 1920s Ford model, of which the Sovietunion bought the factory after it was considered obsolete in the US.Another thing is: Most lend lease trucks shipped to the Sovietunion were Studebakers, Dodge WC51s and jeeps. The idea was to keep the number of brands small to facilitate logistics and supply of spare parts. Most second generation trucks built in Russia in the 1950s look very much like the wartime Studebakers.

Yes, I have just looked for the figures something like 500,000 vehicles that the Soviets did not have to build for themselves. What would have happened without all them I wonder?

Quite possibly the war would’ve been prolonged by a few years! Certainly fewer T34’s would’ve been produced. And fewer materiels would’ve been pushed to the front. The Russians would’ve have been able to mass muntions & personnel to the front either…
