Tanks and armor quiz (medium level)

marmon-herrington Mk VI
an 8-wheeled design inspired by the German 8-wheeled armoured cars (Schwerer Panzerspähwagen). Two prototypes were built, one with a 2 pounder and other with a 6 pounder gun in an open-topped three-man turret with electric powered traverse and protected by 10 to 30 mm of sloped armor. Additional armament consisted of 2 or 3 machine guns.

Your answer is more than sufficient, my dear Mr. Malarz Russ – yes, our special guest star was South African Reconnaissance Car Mk VI, manufactured By South African Railway. Your turn again! And please do remember that our competitors here are yearning for something … really special.

Hiya, y’all!

Okay, here’s one that might be a little tougher:

Enjoy!

But the Schofield tank is not an extensively mysterious vehicle, my dear Mr. Malarz Russ. After all, those particularly British origins are clearly visible – for example, those Universal Carrier sprockets are absolutely unique.

Here you have the very same photo:

Thank you, my dear Mr. Malrz Russ! Well… here is in one highly intriguing picture from our Rarity Cabinet. Do you recognize this type, honorable ladies ang gentlemen? Unbelievably, but this vehicle has its own, specific designation!

Hiya, Librarian!

I’ll offer that it is a Panzerkampfwagen I ausf A / B ohne Aufbau driver training vehicle, unless the hearse / caisson vehicles had a specific designation (you never know with the Germans!).

Panzerkampfwagen I as a driving school vehicle??? Oops, Mr. Malrz Russ was faster!

Absolutely commonsensical conclusions, honorable Gentlemen - Schulfahrzeuge I Ausf. A als Leichte Katafalkwagen was our mystery-vehicle.

Your turn again, my dear Mr. Malarz Russ.

Hello, y’all!

Hopefully this is a little more of a head scratcher:

Enjoy!

“Nahuel” D.L. 43 tank

Hiya, y’all!

Panther F has got it! It’s an Argentinian designed and built Nahuel (Tiger) tank, inspired by the US M4 Sherman. Ironically, after 16 of these were built, they were replaced by surplused Shermans.

That took a whole 4 hours and 8 minutes for someone to solve… think I’m gonna hafta’ come up with some new sources!

Puzzle us, Panther F!

Yes, puzzle us while I’m still awake! It’s only 01:53 A.M. here…

Okee-Dokee, what’s this?

German designed chassis, some sort of Panzer mk 4? Don’t give the answer yet until someone actually says the full name.

Definitely a Panzer III chassis, but what’s that turret?

Geschützwagen IVb für 10.5 cm le.F.H.1811 (Sf.) (Sd.Kfz.1651/1)

BINGO!! You are correct gumalangi! In an effort to come up with a self-propelled vehicle armed with the 10.5cm leFH 18/1, Krupp put forward a design that involved using a shortened Pzkpw IV chassis as the foundation. This chassis utilized only 3 road wheel pairs as opposed to the standard 4 and the resulting vehicle was given the label of leFH 18/1 (Sf)/Geschutzwagen IVb Sdkfz 165/1. Weighing in at 17 tons, the gun could traverse through 70 degrees in the open-topped turret. The vehicle’s armor ranged from 14.5mm to 20mm and was designed to accommodate a 5-man crew. Only 8 prototypes were completed Aug-Dec 1942 and were field tested with the 16th Panzer Division in Russia. The design was ultimately rejected in favor of the simpler and easier to produce Wespe and the vehicle never entered full production.

You’re next.
