Tanks and armor quiz (medium level)

Dat Birch Gun. So good. XD

Last one answered? anything new?

Pretty sure its Wings’ turn to post a picture.

Oops, sorry. I’ve completely forgotten about this thing, since I’ve had a lot on my mind recently.
Here is a little picture that will prove at least passably puzzling. Good hunting!

Similar approach to the Schofield, it appears. But of course, this is not a Schofield. Bit foxed at the moment … JR.

Rawr, what is it with everyone loving hybrids in this thread? XD

Heh, And to think I considered posting the Schofield, because I imagined it to be more obscure… XD

Hmmm I been looking at the Swedish Landsverk L30 - Stridsvagn fm/31 - not right though

Indeed, that’s not the right answer. The mystery vehicle is from a country further south and to the east.

Also, I bet that by now we are all experts in identifying obscure wheel-cum-track vehicles, so this source of mysteries has dried up…

I’m tired of this tank, so I google image searched the provided picture and all it had was this page:

http://forum.boinaslava.net/showthread.php?4434----/page75

You’ll see it on post 1865, though the text translated comes out to this:

Yesterday I took my next portion of interesting books, including this one:
“German Armor Rarities” by Michael Sowodny
And immediately I came across these two interesting machines, from the period around 1939:

These are the German “tanks superhighway” to use the terminology that appears alongside the activity of Rezun

And it’s just interesting samples are made in Tyrol:

It was up to frost crew

I give up.

Well, you actually got very, very close - google image searching the picture from the Russian thread you found, or just looking at the picture’s name would have given you the answer - it’s the German Panzerspähwagen RK Ausf. A , made in 1939 by the Austrian Saurer company, which is why this vehicle was also known as the Saurer RK-9.

Here is some more info about it.

Also, since you got so close, you can post the next enigma.

I had given up but since you posted I thought I would try again.

RK Ausf.A \ Saurer RK-9

From - ‘Encyclopedia of German Tanks of World War Two’, by Peter Chamberlain and Hilary L Doyle on page 179 - it has a picture of both versions as well.

In 1938, the Waffenamt issued an order for Saurer in Vienna to develop a reconnaissance vehicle in the wheel-cum-track configuration. The resulting vehicle, designated Saurer RK 9, was of 8.5 tons, with 14.5 mm to 5.5 mm armour. It was powered by a Saurer OKD diesel motor of 100 hp. On wheels, a speed of 80 km/hr, and on tracks, 30 km/hr could be achieved.

Two prototypes were built. The first, with an open-topped superstructure, was delivered by June 1942, and the second, with a turret, was delivered shortly afterwards. The turret was similar to contemporary reconnaissance vehicle designs. Armament was the EW 141 and an MG 34.

Ninja’d I was reading the book to check when you posted :stuck_out_tongue:

Well, seeing as I’ve somehow been appointed to post the next one, what is this?

Shouldn’t be too hard.

Here’s a better look at our mystery vehicle:

blah 2.jpg

I know what it is, but not going to answer it…

EDIT: attachment snafu.

Souma MCL or MCG converted by the Germans - 8cm Vielfachwerfer auf SPW Somua S303 (f) (or S307 (f) depending on whether a MCL or MCG), mounting 2 racks of 80mm rockets.

Another of the conversions done by Alfred Becker in France utilising captured equipment and French factories.

Yup, that’s exactly it, 8cm Raketenwerfer auf Fahrgestell S 303(f).

I know it was Mr. Churchill who posted it, but, for the sake of expedience, I’m confirming it. That means it’s now your turn. Happy posting!

Indeed. Say, where do you chaps get your submissions? I can never find one that stumps for more than about half an hour.

Actually, I’ve been dredging up the Russian language side of the internet, such as www.aviarmor.net as well as the Polish and Czech ones, namely www.panzernet.net and valka.cz

It does help that I know a bit of Russian and Czech, but Google translate works pretty well to get the gist of it.

Before that is was the French sites, like www.chars-francais.net , which was much easier since I’m fluent in French, but that has pretty much dried out by this point.

Another good source of interesting vehicles was a very good World of Tanks blog called “For the Record” , because the WOT guys are always dredging up forgotten projects to add to the game, but it was closed down a few months ago.
The only WOT blog that I read and is still on is"Status Report" , but that mainly focuses on WOT news rather than historical vehicle overviews.

I am digging out my books again now, trying to find an image that is not so common on a search - been working last few days so not had much time to just sit down and look.

The Chieftains Hatch is pretty interesting at times as is Overlords Blogspot (both WoT related but historical and archival information)
