The above painting makes me glad I wasn’t in the Ardennes during the opening of the Bulge…
I haven’t seen these pictures before , thanks for posting them they are great
Great pics Librarian, thanks for sharing.
Alas, nothing totally new-fangled, my dear Mr. Panzerknacker. The only novelties in my possession are certain snapshots connected with the artworks and creative processes of Paul Mathias Padua, Ernst Kunst and Paul Hähndel, but they will be presented in a more suitable thread
No problemo, is just that I saw it ( a bit of ) in a newsreel and left me wanting some color picture of it.
Very nice but also strange picture , see the strange simbols looking like chineese or japanise writings to me . I have never before seen such on a tiger from Das Reich see this - http://www.dasreich.ca/tigermarks.html . BTW that’s my picture on my profile :D:D
Well, there are no misteries, is just that the illustrator is not familiar with the das Reich “totem”
Oh, thank you very much for your compliments, my dear Gentlemen. Actually, I was only concentrated upon certain artistic accounts with reference to the WW2, when that suggestion in relation to “the year of Tiger” arrived. Admittedly, it had a specific trigger effect upon me, but that’s all.
All the glory belongs to those truly magnificent artists, whose devotion and ability was capable to create a number of absolutely outstanding thematic works of art.
In full accordance with the aforementioned tradition, here is another one connected with our lovely kitty:
Piotr Kolus – Der Sturmtiger, 2005
In the meantime, as always – all the best!
Good info Kenny.
I’ve been away for some time so it’s good to see this excellent thread is alive and well and the fascination with this awesome, but flawed weapon system is still strong.
digger:)
Nice to have back, Cant agree on “flawed” though.
To my thinking it was indeed a flawed weapon system, with mechanical problems, short range, difficulty of transport, cost and diversion of resources.
While certainly a terrific gun platform it’s production drained resources away from the Heer which was in more need of tanks and SP guns.

Most of the flaws were on the Tiger II, a reputation virus that unfortunately affected his older more reliable and battle proven brother, theTiger 1 wich is the tank I think when I say Tiger. The King Tiger low production numbers and impact on the battlefield dindt counted for much so i dont think it should overshadow the good characteritics of the 1942 heavy panzer.
As with many tanks on both Axis and Allied sides, the Tiger 1 had some flaws, for example excessive weight, high fuel consumption, slow speed.
However, in practical terms, it was a formidable opponent, and more than justified itself in combat: which was where its’ qualities counted. In short, it was superlative, and very hard to defeat.
While in terms of firepower I tend to favour the Koenigstiger, and regard that vehicle as the ultimate expression of the Tiger concept, I am aware the Koenigstiger was itself far from perfection.
However, despite its’ faults, I regard the Koenigstiger as the better tank in terms of crew survivability. Hence why I favour it over the Tiger 1.
Which opinion is also why I voted for the Koenigstiger in the poll: it was simply much much harder to kill, than its’ older brother, the Tiger1.
Regards, Uyraell.
PK, any info on this Tiger?
Welcome back, Uryaell!
I agree wholeheartedly. But criticisms must be balanced against the fact that like something of 80 or 90 Tigers in Normandy (IIRC), used expertly in defense, caused a lot of consternation of Allied tankers and commanders. The Tiger’s battlefield effect far outweighed their actual numbers when used not as a “heavy breakthrough tank,” but as a tank destroyer…
Many Thanks, Nickdfresh. Modem, and opsys probs and lack of money were the culprits of my absence.
Kindest Regards, Uyraell.
Okay I know that this is not a personal research forum but can I ask a question? How much would the Tiger I weigh with the Porsche turret?
Hello Dear Gentlemen,
this is a topic close to my heart!
Well, let we see!!!
- with mechanical problems, (when used regarding the manuals, not exactly)
- short range, (compare with…?) The range of JS-2, M-26 and even Centurin was in the same class. And is it really important in defending fights? Even the M-3/5Stuart tank had lower range!!!)
- difficulty of transport, (once more: And is it really important in defending fights? OK, it is, but not critical issue)
- cost and diversion of resources. (against what? Panther tanks, YES!)
AND THE ADVANTAGES?
- very good protection
- very capable gun
- excellent optics
- (usually) well trained crews
-better groung preasure and cross country agility than most of the allied tanks (e.g. M-4!!! T-34 of course not) - very daring FAME
regards:
