Where and when is it?

Brazilian troops of the 1st Expeditionary Infantry Division somewhere in Italy in 1944?? I know Brazil had troops in Italy and thats about it.

The above guesses are wrong. So I’ll give a hint:

Think Olympic Hockey…

Second hint (for those of you very knowledgeable on American weapons):

Look at ALL the rifles VERY closely (especially the man on the left in the second row)…

Third hint, the pic was taken at Anzio…

Finally, I managed to find the troublesome pic: Canadian 1st Special Service Force (The Devil’s Brigade) being briefed at Anzio

Canadian members of the 1st Special Service Force in Italy, 1944.

damn!!!

Very good, you are correct sir…

Are you sure?? I dont see Claude Akins, or Jack Watson anywhere,

I was trying to decipher that censored patch too for a clue…good job.

Since it’s my turn to post, allow me to offer you an enigma in the same vein: Who are these guys? (name, rank and serial number if possible, but the nationality, place and time are also acceptable )

KNIL (Dutch colonial) troops training in the Netherlands East Indies, with infantry tactics apparently based on the Madsen LMG gunner, shortly before WWII, maybe 1940-41.

Ugh! Fun film, but wildly inaccurate. They were obviously going through a “Dirty Dozen” phase in Hollywood at the time.

Yup, that was the answer I was looking for. I thought that stubby Madsen will make this an easy guess for everyone, and what do you know, it did…

Board al yours, Mr Rising Sun!

This isn’t within the rules as there is more than one picture, but it seems to me to be an interesting challenge in the spirit of this thread.

If anyone isn’t happy with it just post and I’ll confine the quiz to one of the photos, but then the answer has to be where and when is it for that photo rather than the more general questions below which don’t require the date as they’re both WWII photos.

What’s the difference in what’s happening in these two pictures? Get this right and the next question is yours if that’s as far as you want to go.

For bonus points, being the right to pose the next two questions, identify each picture by location, activity involved, and nationality of those involved.

Well, your first picture is quite famous and represents World War II recruits wearing gas masks undergoing training exercises on Miami Beach in 1940 and the second one probably shows a group of Australian troops judging by their British gas masks and US style cloth anklets, but I have been unable to learn when or where as of yet - most likely place is Borneo in late 1945.

I’ll keep digging.

The second picture looks much more recent than that - full body suits were pretty rare until Nerve Gases came into common use (early 1950s). Additionally, that isn’t a UK respirator (eye sockets are far too small - for a good set of UK respirator pictures see here). It actually looks quite like the Soviet PMG mask below, which would make it from the 1970s or more recently…

I’d agree that the first picture looks like US WW2 issue masks.

Their footwear is not looking Soviet. Those things (don’t know their names) that are worn over trousesr above shoes - never heard of Soviet Army used such piece of wear.

Which brings us to the point that the gas mask looks not like a Soviet one, but rather like the British one - “Lightweight Service Respirator”.

Pay attention that the Soviet one doesn’t nave a nose, whereas the British one has more distinctive nose.

Definitely WWII.

And definitely being used against gas. Mustard gas, actually.

They’re called gaiters.

They’re American gaiters, but they’re not being worn by American troops.

Whomever they are, they’re likely training for Operation Downfall…
