He does’t look lke Anton Destler, does he?
No, He was Hungarian!
Well, allow me to answer those questions, my dear Mr. Tiger 205.
Who: Gusztáv Jány, commander of the Second Hungarian Army.
When: This particular picture was taken before his execution (November 26, 1947).
Where: Budapest, Hungary.
Why: He was convicted for war crimes and for causing the deaths of 140.000 Hungarian soldiers at Voronezh in January of 1943 due to “irresponsible command of his troops”.
Dear Mr. Librarian,
This is a PERFECT answer!
Congratulations!
Let we see your enigma!
Please excuse me for being late to work, my dear Mr. Tiger 205. Simply, I haven’t even had a chance to work on anything I had planned to work on today, but finally I got some time off, and here is our latest photographic quandary:
Of course, we are asking the same old questions: where and when.
In the meantime, as always – all the best!
I am just going to take some WILD guesses here. Its looks like some type of surrender,German officers escorted in American jeeps to meet for terms of surrender.Don’t know where though. When April 1945 another WILD guess.Just trying to get the ball rolling
Well, you are very good with those wild guesses, my dear Mr. Rudeerude, although this particular scene actually happened in November of 1944. But here is another tip for you: those German officers actually have the dubious pleasure of… tactless quarreling!
Hello!
Since it has been quiet in this thread I am posting a new question…
What is it? When? Where? roughly…
Hi Igor and welcome back! What we got here is a fake M-10 (actually it’s a Panther, official designation: „Panther G/ M10 ‘Ersatz’“) during the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944. Must’ve been around Malmedy/Belgium.
I never counted to be able to trick you… Correct answer. Your turn if you wish., Flamethrower.
Damn,I got excited when I seen this thread was brought back to life. One of my favorite threads. And I was about to comment on the photo and didn’t notice it was too late…sigh
I think I have a ‘stump-the-military-buffs’ pic. But I’d like to see if FTG has something up his sleave first. Regards to Egorka for bringing this thread back up. Hope all is well…
Please, go right ahead. I’m on the board mostly while on duty these days means my sources are out of reach…
Well, fortunately, my work firewall/filter is down (happens periodically). So, here goes:
Who, when, and where are these guys?
Forcemen of 3-1, First Special Service Force, in an M-2 60mm. mortar pit. April 20-27, 1944, Anzio Beach Head, Italy.Nickdfresh I recall you posting a similar picture awhile back.I googled Devils Brigade and whala…picture poped up.
Dooo’oh! I hoped it would last a bit longer based on the Johnson M1941 LMG in the pic which was also used in limited service with the USMC and OSS…
Correct.
Also a nifty Johnson light machine gun in the pic. Dont see many of those.
Here we go guys a two page scan for ya.When and were or a simple two words will answer it.I think it might be easy…
Operation Varsity/Plunder? (1945 on the Rhine)
Sorry Nickdfresh this is earlier than “45”
