Where and when is it?

I’m sorry but i didn’t realize that on the top of the pic, they printed the original caption… :frowning: I have to countermand the quiz, since i don’t know if it’s possible to cancel a post. I’ll post something new, tomorrow…

Hi guys,
i’m sorry for the delay and for my previous mess…
Here’s the next puzzle. At first loook it may appear quite difficult, 'cause there are few clues, but after some attempts, i’ll give you some…
You should guess from which Country is this the Armoured Division, where they are and when (year it’ll be enough…).
Cheers!!!

puzzle 1.jpg

OK, let me try:
The M10 Tank Destroyers of the 3rd Algerian Infantry Division (3e DIVISION d’INFANTERIE ALGERIENNE), Castelforte, Italy, autumn 1943

Hi woj,
you got the Country (Italy), the kind of tank, but i’m sorry to tell you that this soldiers are not from Algerie and the year isn’t the 1943…

Hi Mr. Skorzeny,
By reason of the photo resolution it´s impossible to find any other details, so I can only try again.

The M10 TD were used in Italian campain by the British, US, French, Polish, Canadian and Brazilian forces.
The biggest Polish armoured unit in Italy was the 2nd Armoured Brigade. The French and Brazilian forces were infantry (not armoured) divisions.
But you want to know the armoured division.
So it could be only  the 6th South African AD, the Old Ironsides of the US Army, the 6th and the 7th British AD or the 5th Canadian AD.
Most of British M10 were armed with the long barrel 17 pdr gun with muzzle break and the vehicles on photo use the 3" M7 Gun.
So in conclusion I suggest they are South Africans.

Yeah, they’re Wolverines, not Achilles…

Yes, yes woj!!! These are South African Tankers from the 6th South African Armoured Division. The year was 1944, but i grant an allowance to you, 'cause you guessed which Division (i just asked from which Country they are…)
Here’s the original caption of the picture :
Tankers of the 6th South African Armoured Division reload their tracked vehicles, behind the firing line next to Monte Sole. Dicember 18th, 1944.
Monte sole is few miles south-east of Bologna.
The next step is yours, woj!!!

Thank you, Mr. Skorzeny

Bologna was taken by Polish 2nd Corps, I didn´t know the South Africans fought the same battle :-0

OK, let´s try this one:

Infact they didn’t fight the same battle. The 6th South African Armoured Division were part of the General Mark W. Clark’s 5th Army, that was engaged in the assault to the Gothic Line. The Polish Troops were the first (with an Italian Bersaglieri Battaillon) to get into Bologna on April 21st, 1945. There are four Polish War Cemeteries here in Italy. The biggest, with 1418 graves, is in Bologna. I have a friend that lives not far from there and he gave me the chance to visit it…

Concerning the quiz, the only things that sound familiar (to me) is the Sten MK II smg in the right soldier’s hand and the P-38 holster of the soldier at left. They look Germans, but i don’t understand what they are watching… Let me try a wild guess : German Soldiers in Italy, 1944…

Looks like they are chasing a mouse :D.No idea when or where, but are those canisters used for supply drop from planes ??

Agree rudeerude, infact the Sten MKII smg is the more suitable weapons for mouse chase… I think your assumption may be right, about those canisters. I’m scared we need some more clues…
Cheers, mate!!!

Yes, rudeerude, they are…
They are Germans, it is 1944 but it´s not Italy.

The only clue i have to realize where they are is the wooden-roof cabin. Isn’t much…
I go for German Soldiers, 1944, in Yugoslavia.

ps - are you sure that if we guess “What?” (are they doing), we don’t deserve an extra prize? rudeerude goes for “mouse chase”, i say that they “go mushrooming”…

I believe they’re in France doing some sort of internal security/occupation function (inspecting SOE airdrops?) The captured Sten’s are a giveaway as they were also issued to the Milice…

mouse chase? mushrooming? Perhabs both of them
But you´re right Mr. Skorzeny. German soldiers inspecting droped containers in… Yugoslavia, 1944!

Your turn, Amico mio

Thanx, woj.
Here’s the next quiz, for the series “easy for those who know , hard for those who don’t…” You should guess the name and the Nation of the Division, where they are and when (year).
Cheers!!!

Hmmm… June 1944, just some days before D-day started, Panzer IV Ausf. H from the 12 SS Panzerdivision “HJ” in the city of Le Havre, France ???

Seem to be Heer troops.
I’d go for 24th Panzer-Division (former 1st Cavalry) in Italy, 1943.

Hi dear “Where and when is it?” fans, good friends of mine…

woj i’m sorry to tell you that isn’t France and isn’t 1944. But you guessed that’s is an SS division… Not the 12 SS Panzerdivision “HJ”.

FTG you guessed the place (Italy) and the year (1943), but not the name of the Division… After the next attempt, i’ll give to you an important clue…

Cheers!!!

OK, indeed, the plate fixed under the traffic lights is in Italian: Passagio Pedonale -> crosswalk
Must be the 1st SS Panzerdivision LAH. August 1943, Verona.
