WW2 aircraft

Dear Carson,
Absolutely spot on. The helm is yours! Cheers.

Dear Colonel,
I take pleasure in submitting an italian heavy fighter…what’s her name?
carson

IMAM ro.57? Although I have not seen a marque with inline engines.

Good morning Kiwimac (good evening for you) and welcome back
Well you almost made it! It isn’t the IMAM RO/57 but the RO/58 which however were rather similar. RO/57
had a normal tail and RO/58 had a twin tail besides the former had radial engines and the latter had inline engines.
RO/58 was built in 1942 but sadly remained a prototype.
All considered I believe control should be yours
Cheers

Ok then,

This aircraft was built sometime in the 1930s: It is not American (just a subtle hint there)

So far no luck…still seeking…not easy but I’ll find it if nobody gets there before
carson

Well hello again, good people!

Of course the aircraft pictured is not American, since we’re talking about the Gregor FDB 1 from 1938, a uniquely Canadian design.

By the way, my first impression after a short cursory glance was that the mystery airplane is a I-153 of the Chinese Nationalist Air Force…

…and my first silly impression was that it might have been a racing biplane…but of course you’re right (just think I have a large big pic of the mistery a/c in my files) and I’m sure Kiwimac is going to confirm it…
Anxiously…waiting for your next offer then and welcome back
carson:)

Nice to be back, let me tell you! (although I don’t know for how long - time is in short supply, as ever)

Well, since there is no shadow of a doubt that I am right about this, please allow me to offer you our next entry:

If I may intrude, the second pic looks like the japanese copy of a Douglas B18 Bolo with twin tails (of course it can’t be)

it’s not

Concerning your post #630 I have a crazy idea: a dutch Fokker captured by the japanese?
carson

I’ve been looking and looking but didn’t find a japanese twin engined aircraft matching your pic (unless it is a Mitsubishi G2M Nell with removed conning towers)…so at this stage I’m going to throw the sponge…

Well-done, I have more pictures and a scan of a 1939 Magazine article about it.

Hi Wingsofwrath,
It looks like a variant of the FIAT BR.20 which was operated by the Japanese.

Yes, my dear Colonel, you are absolutely right! It is indeed a Japanese FIAT BR.20.

In fact the whole idea of an Italian bomber operated by the Japanese seems so unreal, I actually spent some time playing with the brightness/contrast of the picture to make sure that the Japanese insignia was visible as a sort of red herring… But apparently, not everyone was fooled.

By the way, another rather unlikely fact that nonetheless happens to be absolutely true - during WW2, The Romanian army operated about 2000 Type 38 Arisaka 6.5x50mm rifles we got in a 1935 deal with the Japanese government …

Mon Colonel, c’est a vous de fournir la nouvelle énigme.

And just think I spent hours in canvassing all possible japanese bombers of the thirties…bravo Colonel!
carson
I just read on Wiki that 85 such planes were sold by FIAT to Japan who called them type I

Good morning Wingsofwrath and Carson,
thank you for your words of encouragement and here is my latest offering for you to dwell on. Just a small clue : only 2 of these machines ever flew in an active group!

It’s a beautiful picture of a beautiful french fighter Arsenal VG33
carson

Dear Carson,
There certainly is no fooling you! Excellent rapid and correct response. I believe that the ball is in your park. Have yourself a super weekend, talk with you soon. Regards.

Thanks very much Colonel for sure I’m going to have a nice weekend because tomorrow is my birthday. Later I’ll take the liberty of proposing a new challenge
cheers:lol:
