Caproni Ca161 an experimental aircraft of 1936 for high altitude researches
Carson1934
On 8 May 1937, Lieutenant Colonel Mario Pezzi broke the world altitude record with a flight to 15,655 m (51,362 ft). The following year, Pezzi broke the record again in the more powerful Ca.161bis, making a flight to 17,083 m (56,047 ft) on 22 October 1938. As of 2009, this record still stands for piston-powered aircraft.
Ah, too easy!
good afternoon gentlemen,
what about identifying this old but classical biplane of the early thirties?
Carson1934
This challenge is outstanding since one week now therefore it proves more difficult than I thought…hence clues are in order:
- this aircraft is one year older than myself
- its engine is a Hispano-Suiza 12Lb
It should be considerably easier by now shouldn’t it?
carson1934
Looks to be convertible to amphibious use.
I suspect it’s a Levasseur PL.10 in that case. Stop! - carson1934? - it must be a PL.107 then!
You’re almost correct dear Sir…it is indeed one aircraft of the prolific Levasseur family and exactly the Levasseur PL101 (very similar to the PL10) of 1933…anyway your answer is acceptable to me therefore may I ask you to proceed with a new challenge…
Cheers
Carson1934
A slightly more up-to-date one.
Certainly a Focke Wulf 191…from 1942 and only three prototypes were built
carson1934
You’re too good for me Mr. Carson - I can’t follow you!
Oh no dear Ealdwita I’m not too good for you…I just bookmarked a few good aviation websites and I have a good visive memory…
At any rate here comes my next challenge (a very easy one) but I love this particular aircraft
Carson1934
Consolidated Aircraft PB2Y Coronado?
Yes Ealdwita it is indeed the “Coronado”…I told you it was easy…your turn now
Carson1934
I’m sure you’ll have no trouble with this strange-looking thing!
I would say the nose section of the Douglas B18A “Bolo”…
Cheers
Carson1934
Correct. As my Grandfather would say, “Only a Mother could love a face like that!”
Good morning to you all gentlemen,
may I propose today the identification of an ugly but rather well known bomber pre WW2?
Carson1934
PZL-30? I ask vaguely.
Yes Kiwimac it is indeed the awkward PZL P-30 a rather unsatisfactory polish bomber…her nickname was “Zubr”…
your turn please
Carson1934
Apologies for my absence. Equine problems - thankfully now solved. Ready again to take my place in the firing line!
