WW2 relics rediscovered

I believe the junkyard Panther was found in England.
It was one of several assembled postwar for testing.

It was purchased by a German and taken to Germany and restored privately.

It was featured in Wheels and Tracks years ago.

Dunno where it is today.

Stug III pulled out of bog (Russia?):

Still looks pretty neat…

The bidders are lining up…

The mud has preserved it amost intact. It still shows a nice yellow sand camo with almost perfect German crosses and individual number… But I don’t think that this discovery is newest.

It’s amazing how well bogs preserve items, this Stug looks like a few hours in a work shop and it would be like new, probably not running as quick. Great find.

Hello everyone, for those interested, there is a site to see, it is unavoidable. It is in Czech but you will see that despite the time that has passed, some wrecks are in an incredible state of preservation.

The anaerobic and slightly acidic nature of the soil makes bogs ideal to preserve anything, in this case, no O2, no oxidation of the metal, no rust…

Cheers

Not to be morbid but it does wonders for preserving thousands of year old bodies as well, never ceases to amaze me at the intact things that can be pulled out of bogs. Excellent preserver of history.

This a little old news 2007-2008.I searched the forum and could not find anything about these M3A1 Stuarts found in Brazil. So here I post a link to a Youtube slide show and a short article about these M3A1 Stuarts found in Brazil.

Unlikely. I don’t think Shermans or any other lend-lease tanks were used in the Finnish front. At least not up in Lapland.

Never claimed that, I was just saying these L&L tanks were discharged up there.

I remember reading somewhere that a logging company in Oregon uses a modified Sherman tank to haul up the logs from where they chop them down to the top where they truck them out. I will try to find where I saw this.

Oh alright.

I saw one in the ‘Ax Men’ show. Couldn’t find a picture of the machine but they did mention it was a ww2 Sherman.

… And I would have posted a link to the shows IMDB site but it seems I am not allowed to do so because of my low post count

Please feel free to use the ‘New members topic- Introduce yourself here:’ thread in the Off topic to increase your post count.

Shermans in whole, or in part were sold as demo, and construction equipment after the war,as were the lighter Stuart tanks. Sometimes used as they were, sometimes bought up in lots, and converted to a purpose built machine, like the logging yarder you spoke of.( Cable show Ax Men.)

Anyone have a picture of one of these modified logging tanks…just curious…thanks.

I found some, it appears that a number of different companies used M-4 chassis, or at least most of one for their machines.

Thanks tankgeezer…clearly an M-4 chassis. Incredible that they are still running after all these years.

Not really. Those engines were extremely durable if properly maintained and cared for…
