This photo shows COLONEL Cates Commander of the 4th Corps US Marines. He was not elevated to the rank of General until post war, 1948, at which time he took command of the US Marine Corps and remained in this position for 4 years. Semper Fi.
Hmm…my book says General from where I scanned it from,but it was published in 1948.
