It is generally forgotten nowadays, or more probably not even recognised, that Poland stood alone against the first Nazi assault, and then had to deal with the Soviets doing the same.

Poland was doomed against much more powerful Nazi and Soviet enemies, but still fought bravely. Alas, to no purpose.

Meanwhile the British and French governments went to war with Germany over its invasion of Poland, but did bugger all to help Poland while Poland was actually fighting the Nazis.

While it was critical to the eventual defeat of the Nazis, and the Italian Fascists, that Britain held out on its own for the first couple of years of WWII, the Polish defeat wasn’t critical but, unlike the relative comfort Britain had in its isolated islands and France’s spectacular failures in its own defence along with the BEF in 1940, small Poland fought itself to a standstill against large Germany and the Soviets without the luxury of the soft Vichy surrender by France and the lucky escape of the British from Dunkirk.

Apart perhaps from the Dutch in very different circumstances, the Poles were the only people who willingly went to war against a much more powerful enemy in Germany in the knowledge that they had nothing behind them if they lost, and in the knowledge that they probably would lose.

So, the point of this post is not that the thread title is ‘63 days of Extraordinary Courage (Warsaw Uprising 1944)’ but that the Poles had many years before 1944 demonstrated extraordinary courage while being the only nation and people to fight against the overwhelming powers of the Nazis and Soviets carving up Poland. And they fought on land, sea and air in subsequent years with extraordinary courage, and effect.

One example of Poland’s continuing war. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptijNcDanVw
