In this link is a summary of the book “A bastard of a place”
It tells the story from the soldiers perspective and also about operational matters on the battles for Papua new Guinea and thus the sea lanes to Australia from America.
It is an eye opener to this largely ignored theater of operations in 1942/43.
The Author Peter Brune has written several books on those campaigns.
I highly Recommend his work. For most some of the High command issues raised will seem completely Foreign to what rest of the world has been educated.
In fact some may find it offensive, which it is not.
You will however find out first hand just how horrendous the fighting conditions were and also the nature of soldier on both sides.
Compelling read.
