Where did the saying (The Whole Nine Yards ) come from ??

Cant remember off hand but has something to do with the Navy doesnt it?
There are loads of theories as to the origins of this phrase but it is generally accepted that it first appeared in the late 50’s - early 60’s.
Cloth for suits

All I’ve heard of was the length of MG bullets.
You are right it ,It was the 27 feet of ammo the waist gunners had .Also the bombers were most vulnerable to attack when they were on their way home ,when the enemy saw the ballturret guns hanging down ,It was one of 2 things 1 out of ammo 2 or ball gunner was dead.

Go to some of the places that discuss the origins of the saying & most dismiss the MG belt theory out of hand, especially as it didn’t come into use until well after WWII.
I believe that it originally came from the army. When you used all of your machine guns ammo, you would use exactly 9 yards of ammunition. This I believe is where it originally came from.

I actually got that bit of info from a friend that was a pilot in Vietnam
