The link below provides a full report and pictures of one of the fastest aircraft of its class, but never went into production. We are talking about the Heinkel He 119. It was being developed as a Reconnaissance Aircraft where high level speed were an advantage - Average speed was the same as the cruising speed for a Mk 1 Spitfire (313 mph with 1000kg load against 318 mph for the combat loaded Mk 1 Spit).
Limited use aircraft with a complicated engine arrangement was probably what cancelled its further development. The Luftwaffe wanted bombers and fighters more than long range high speed reconnaissance (at least prewar).
