A promise, a disappointment

Presented as a triumph of propaganda regime of Benito Mussolini with the prototype breaking many records, their entry into operational service does not live up to expectations. The following link provides a full report with information and photos of this aircraft. I hope you enjoy and I count on your visit.

The problem of this aircraft was that actually it was an excellent prototype, but when it had to become a true operative mass production ground attack airplane, all the records of the prototype were buried by tons of fuel, armor, operational tools and instruments, that changed it into another, and much worse aircraft …

Is it too simplistic to say that a much stronger (new) aircraft motor would nullify all of the above weight penalties ?

Italy lacked some twin row 1400 or at list 1300 hp engine, the breda 88 had much potential to become the italian Mosquito, or at list the italian Beaufighter.

here you can see it in the making…

An interesting aircraft, in many ways superior - indeed vastly superior - to previous, rather antiquated Italian ground attack/heavy fighter aircraft. It may be a bit simplistic to say that the substitution of more powerful engines of itself would have allowed it to emerge as a sort of heavy Italian version of the Mosquito. Such a conversion would almost certainly have required a significant number of consequential modifications, delaying production further. In any event, at this time, it was already clear that the capacity of Italian industry to produce new advanced weapons was very limited. Best regards, JR.
