It appears that the deck is awash. That, and other apparent signs would indicate that this photo was taken as it was sinking.

Hunted down by HMS Exeter,Achilles and Ajax ,the Admiral Spee fought the first seabattle of WW2 at the mouth of the Rio de la Plata .The German ship had light damage but almost no ammunition left.The ship retreated into the neutral harbor of Montevideo.The German crew got 48 hours to make the ship seaworthy again.Meanwhile the British Navy pulled of bluff by making the Germans believe that the Brits had recieved strong reinforcements.The German captain ,knowing he had no sufficient ammo left,believed the British bluff and thought he had no chance against the British. The Admiral Graf Spee was then sunk by its own crew just outside Montevideo harbor(Uruguay).She sank in 8 m deep waters. Her captain Langsdorff afterwards commited suicide.The crew chose to remain in Montevideo.Greetz,Brummbar
