Von der Heydte was a very capable commander but his mission was doomed from the beginning.His troopers were dropped,partly by totally inexperienced pilots,resulting in a complete disaster.Totally dispersed and many without proper food or weapons and ammo they roamed the Ardennes.Many just disappeared never to be heard of again.Von der Heydte himself and a few of his men surrendered completely exhausted and almost frozen to death.
