Attack on Fort Eban Emael

Probably one of the most successful paratroop operations of WW2 the German capture of the Belguim Fort Eban Emael. Pretty good, yet simple website on it. I wish I had more pictures of the attack on the fort Then maybe we can move this to the German section.

Wow thanks … thats really interesting. I moved your other topic to Other Military Units.

Hello guys,

After seeing an Eben-Emael topic overhere, I decided to register myself (to yet another WW2 forum ).
Well, there are loads of (original) pictures on the website that Hans gave you (http://www.fort-eben-emael.be).
If you scan through eBay, you can find original pictures as well, but be careful, although some sellers say the pictures are from Eben-Emael, I can asure you, that they weren’t taken at Eben-Emael, but at the Maginot Line in France (or at another Belgian fortress). I can tell the difference

Anyhow, if you guys have questions left about the fortress, feel free to ask  (be careful though, once you get me going about the fortress, it’s very hard to stop me )

Greetings,

Bart Geraerts

Welcome bart!

Thanks Erwin!

About the fort:
The first time I visited it was 5 years ago, and 1,5 years ago, I became a guide overthere. And I can asure you guys, after those 5 years - even nowadays - I still keep on discovering new things about the fortress. Together with fellow guides, we go to some of the bunkers where ‘normal’ visitors aren’t allowed once in a while. That gives us the opportunity to discover new facts once in a while.
I often have discussions (in a good way) with a German collegue of mine, and togheter, with a lot of reasoning, we figure out what really happened at certain places. Just by observing and reading the reports from back then. If you spend time looking at details, you’ll discover enormous amounts of new things

By the way, shouldn’t this topic be somewhere else? This is (or is going to be - that’s what I hope) a discussion about the fortress…
By the way #2, in the topic-title: it’s supposed to be “Eben-Emael”, that’s the correct way to spell it

thanks for the link! ,you´re guide at the Eben-Emael?.
great,i want to visit it one day,but i haven´t the money now :frowning:

Yes, I’m a guide overthere… so if you have any questions, feel free to ask

Well thanks to you … i found out that i had been looking at pictures of German attacks and thinking it was for Eben Emael. Coz the ones i thought were the fort look nothing like the real one. Well you learn something new everyday. Thanks.

As you might have noticed our Dutch and Belguim section is a bit lacking so please feel free to add anything.

Again thanks for the posts.

i wonder, how could they accompished this feat withmostly bolt-action rifles and mines… (a couple mg34s)

They used a new way of attacking the fort (gliders) and a new type of explosive; the shaped charge. And there are tons of other things that involved the quick defeat…

i know that stuff. its the fact that they could shoot their way past the large opposiition with mostly clunky bolt weapons

i thought the fort has great air defense and they cant destroy those small band of soldiers/take down gliders before they arrive?
