Ballantyne Illustrated Histories

This pulp series of paperbacks first published in the late sixties was written on a variety of topics by some of the best British war historians. Divided into 5 categories: Weapons, Battles, Campaign, Politics in Action and Leaders, the 120-odd titles in the series provide a comprehensive layman’s look at the second war and elements of the First.

Printed in bulk in the UK, Australia and the US these histories sold for a dollar. That may explain the dearth of them to-day as millions probably filled landfill sites. Some are available on e-bay and from used book sellers. At now inflated prices, they’re still well worth the read.

I have fond memories of these books.

When I was growing up and starting to develop an interest in military history, I was an avid buyer and reader of these books.

The price was very attractive too if remember correctly - an ideal pocket money/allowance purchase.
