Anyone know when the British Army gave up using a “Batman” as an Officers servant? Where does the word “Batman” originate?
OED: • noun dated (in the British armed forces) an officer’s personal valet or attendant.
— ORIGIN from Old French bat ‘packsaddle’; the word originally refered to an orderly in charge of the bat horse which carried the officer’s baggage.
I think it was in the 70s but I know the household division have still retained theirs.
Derna derna derna derna derna BATMAN!!!
