Possibly a dumb question, but did the Gloster and Fiat actually fight in the Battle of Britain?
Not dumb at all because they are pretty unlikely - but yes they did fight - the Gladiator was out-classed of course, as was the FIAT, but both had a critical advantage despite their lack of speed, in that they could out-turn anything else in the sky at the time - Hurricane pilots found the CR.42 pretty hard to shoot down unless they took them by surprise.
But this was the ‘last gasp’ for biplane fighters, as the bombers got too fast to catch, they could not even be used as night-fighters and the FIAT in particular was very badly equipped to do anything - most had no radios or navigation equipment, only 2 machine guns, and an open cockpit, so on that score the Gladiator was a better bet, and did last longer into the war…
