Being a Texican myself may I suggest Google. Use the video option for the search and look for ‘Battleship Texas historical’ and ‘Battleship Texas war video’.

I’ve been to the battleship several times. Is this the last dreadnaught in the world? Quite a ship! Looks a bit dinosaur-ish, mind you.
Since the Texas was a New York class battle ship, launched in May, 1912 (yes NINETEEN TWELVE!), and since 2012 is only two years away, it won’t be long till it’s 100 years old!!
It was commissioned in March 12, 1914. And yes, I’d think it’s about the only WW1 ship left except the cruiser Olympia is still there in Philadelphia.
I’ve been on the Texas, Olympia, and New Jersey (BB-62 isn’t far from the Olympia.) And I’d love to see the Alabama, Massachusetts, and North Carolina.
Pitty such great ships as the Enterprise, Tennessee, and Californa were scrapped.

I’ve been on the Alabama. They have a pretty nice museum/park set up. It’s pretty impressive and hard. I cracked my head on quite a few hatchways.
Did any of you know about the AD/ND on the Alabama? That’s a Accidental Discharge/Negligent Discharge of a 5 inch gun?
One if the 5 inch turrets had a round in the tube and they had all the turrets align towards each other (as you see in many pictures.) Well the ‘safety’, which we all know isn’t all that safe on any weapon, somehow was released and the 5 inch round went through another 5 inch turret and killed several sailors.
I know in war that happens but still everytime I see a picture of any warship with the guns pointing at each other I kind of wonder if they are loaded.
Imagine if the U.S.S. Texas had it’s ‘C’ 14 inch turret have a AD/ND while pointing to the rear.

As I understand it, the Texas was one of America’s earliest answers to British Admiral Fisher’s game-changing Dreadnaught. The ship looks very menacing and threatening. Unfortunately, it’s not in good shape. It did fight in both WWI & WWII, however, in both the Atlantic and Pacific. I think the people of Houston will cough up the money necessary to maintain it, and perhaps even create a dry-dock for it. This will not be inexpensive.
And pity such fine ships as the Enterprise, Alaska, California, Tennesse, etc… were all cut up.
Yes it will be expensive to fix the Texas, but it’s a huge part of our history.

NZ PAID by Public Subscription for a Heavy Cruiser.
Unfortunately it served with the Royal Navy in World War One.
The United Kingdom repaid NZ generosity by scrapping HMS New Zealand in 1923.
Apparently, the idea of “Colonials” having a warship of any military significance in the far-off Antipodes was anathema to their Lordships of the Admiralty.
Oddly, it was Winston Churchill who said the ship should be re-christened HMNZS New Zealand and Gifted to NZ for her wartime service in WW1.
Granted, Churchill’s feelings of guilt over Gallipoli may have had a part in that.
However: NZ has never since had a comparable vessel, nor ever is NZ likely to.
Not that our own subsequent governments and politicians have any better a record with regard to preserving military history.
Those same politicians spent 25 million dollars preserving the history of a bohemian feminist bisexual author, but would not spend a mere 21 million dollars to preserve HMNZS Achilles. All that remains of her is “A” turret and the forward Gun-Director platform. I have been inside the remains of both.
I also retain possession of WW2 documents from Achilles. Documents the NZ Govt will NEVER see. Not as long as I live.
That is MY protest against the Govt. lack of interest in NZ’s own history.

I consider New Zealand and Australia the two most loyal countries in the world. They stuck with England through thick and thin and even now back up the U.S. all the time. They deserve more, a lot more.

The problem in both NZ and Australia is the same.
The governments of both regularly invoke sentiment for our pasts, and in doing so ensure that bulk of the populace will to large extent support governmental plans of whatever nature.
But when it comes to giving that same populace something back for its’ often largely unconditional support, the governments will perform Politically Correct inanities such as preserving the history of an anti-government, feminist, bohemian, bisexual, socialist, tubercular twat, rather than have a vessel which contributed substantially to the maritime history of a then very young nation preserved as an appropriate memorial.
Some how, the sacrifices the military made for the nation are NOT to be referred to unless it is the one day of the year allotted to such, whilst “appropriate” memorialisation is that of a (naturally, female, for Women do every constructive thing, while men only ever destroy) person who hated government and all it stood for, and did her level best to never be in NZ for longer than it took to leave the place.
There are various Australian examples which parallel said inanities.
Hence My vitriol over HMNZS Achilles: the one (then) surviving Naval vessel over which the NZ populace had just and Proud claim.

Even now I hear of Aussie subs kicking our fleet posterior in war games. They sneek past our carriers screens and ‘sink’ the flattops.
Darn good that is! Makes us keep our eyes open!
I’m sure you know of this website but they chronicle those games now and then (and alot besides.)
And I know the Navies of New Zealand and Australia will do very well in any shoot’en war.

Unfortunately, Deaf my friend, I’m unconvinced the Navies of either Australia or NZ would these days do well in any “shoot’en war”.
You see, what NZ managed to do was very clever, politically, and suicidally stupid militarily.
I’m reasonably sure Australia has managed almost the same thing.
The respective publics have been told the navies are getting “new ships”.
Which is an outright LIE.
The navies are getting new HULLS.
With the old worn out shit, masquerading under the title of “modern, up to date equipment” in mildly reconditioned form put back into the new hulls.
Which is far indeed from “new ships” as each government so loudly proclaims.
All of which ensures that if there is a “shoot’en war” no vessel of either the RAN or RNZN will survive for longer than the first ten minutes in combat without direct and very personal Divine Intervention; which event is highly unlikely to occur.
Of a certainty NZ has had NO truly modern military equipment since WW2.
I discount the LAV vehicles recently purchased for the army: that design is at least 30 years old.
I discount the Aermacci trainers: that design dates to 1966.
I discount the C130 J’s: that design dates to 1951.
The “new hulls” were in fact designed in 1974.
It is thus VERY plain to see that nothing new at all has been purchased, and thus even if employed, it will not survive long.
NZ will, as is usual, be eyeball deep in the shit until the US comes to our aid yet again. Only: in the last 35 years NZ has done sfa to actually encourage the USA to such a course.

i’m not an expert in computer science. But there is a quite simple way to post pictures on a thread like this one. Is the way that i use every time i want to post some pictures on “Where & When”, or “Do you shoot?..” or any other thread.
Just enter in Reply to Thread and then make click on Attachments. On the following window, just select Add Files and, on the next window, make click on Select Files. Here you have to select the Disk where you have your pictures (Desktop or Disk C or D, etc.). Then just follow the messages. I think it’s quite simple. Best regards.
