~Best R.A.F Aircraft fighter/bomber~

One of my personal favourites is the Fairey Swordfish, it was used by the Royal Navy and the RAF, it is an old model pretty much outdated by world War 2, but was operated as a primary attack aircraft into 1942.
The crew called it the “Stringbag”.
After reoperating the Swordfish, they brang out the new model in 1943 called “Swordfish Mark II”, they made about 4 different makes of the Swordfish but the first and second oldies are my favourite :smiley:

Swordfish Mark II

* Length: 10.87 m
* Height: 3.76 m
* Wing Span: 13.87 m
* Crew: 3
* Weight: 2,135 kg (empty)
* Power: Bristol Pegasus MK XXX, 750 hp
* Speed: 245 km/hr (maximum), 214 km/hr (floatplane maximum)
* Ceiling: 3,260 m
* Range: 1,650 km (unloaded)
* Armament: 680 kg payload or 1 of 730 kg torpedo; 2 of Vickers 0.303-inch machine guns

Fairey Swordfish 2

Spitfire for me the best british fighter plane . :wink:

Where have we seen this spelling mistake before?

Which plane in 1942, 1943 you like most?

submarine Spitfire

Hmmmmmm.

perhaps FERROUSTWAT LIVES AGAIN!!!

No plane in the world will ever match the Spitfire, in my opinion the most beautiful thing that man has ever built.

Well spotted that man !

Reference the aircraft, I can’t really say which is my favourite as they are for different tasks. But some of those that I’m fond of are:

Spit - most aesthetically pleasing, plus the most agile fighter of BoB.
Lanc - Most graceful multi-engine bomber.
Mozzie - Wooden Wonder and the fastest SOB of it’s time.
Dak - Most robust jumpship/tpt out - last one off the production lines in 1947 and still in use today.
Swordfish - Beautiful slow ‘Stringbags’ - punched above it’s weight in a mono-winged era.

Edited to add that I agree wholeheartedly with BDL’s comment above.

My favourite was definitly the swordfish.

Although I’m not sure they were in service with the RAF. I thought they were a purely FAA aircraft.

Can anyone give info on their RAF uses? or units?

Salute

I agree…the more beautiful airplane of World War 2

Senta a Pua!!!

Spitfires are awesome aswell , i have about 30 models of them, but still my favourite is the Stringbag fairey swordfish 2 :smiley: :smiley: .

1000ydstare they were normally used for the navy to bomb , but they upgraded in 1943 and then the RAF started to use them for fighters and bombers. :wink: :wink:

Nice picture by the way Clauss von Stauffeberg 8) , where did you get that from?

Not sure where you got that from mate, but the RAF never used the Swordfish as a fighter or a bomber. It was purely a FAA aircraft.

That link does not say that!

Anyway use your head - why would the RAF use, from 1943 onwards, an obsolete 2-seater biplane torpedo bomber as a fighter and bomber in the era of the Spitfire, Mosquito & Lancaster? Mong.

What, no Tempest or Typhoon?

Because man of stoat , it was a plane that was recognized with the British, and i put the link im my owne words.

Swordfish were never used by RAF (according to http://www.raf.mod.uk/history/timeline.html).

Meanwhile, for Royal Navy, Swordfish was “The Fleet Air Arm’s most famous aircraft” (according to http://www.fleetairarm.com/index2.htm)

Edited: for the 2nd link, Exhibitions - World War II - Swordfish - More details)
Second edit: Swordfish also at http://www.royalnavyhistoricflight.org.uk/History%20Gallery.htm

thanks for the Links Dani, especially that http://www.raf.mod.uk/history/timeline.html
Thats cool. 8)

Wow, the RAF was in the 1700’s, i thought it was from the 1800’s, so the RAF wasn’t just planes but hot air balloons aswell…amazing :smiley:

The Royal Air Force did not exist until 1 Apr 1918:

The Royal Air Force is formed by amalgamating the RFC and RNAS. Bristol F.2B Fighters of No. 22 Squadron carry out the first official missions of the RAF. A female branch of the new Service, the Women’s Royal Air Force is also formed. Those squadrons belonging to the RNAS were allocated new numbers in the 200 range - No 1 Squadron RNAS became 201 Squadron RAF, 2 Squadron RNAS became 202 Squadron RAF, etc.

It says on the bottom of this main page where it says timelines 1780–present day, isnt that how old the RAF is ?, flying balloons is regarded as aircraft
