Big Wing.
Spitfires, part of the Duxford-based "Big Wing" in the air, Summer 1940. The Big Wing, a somewhat controversial tactical deployment favoured by some Fighter Command officers, involved deploying 3-4 squadrons (up to 48 fighters) in a single, united formation with the object of enhancing coordination and striking power. Big Wings played a significant part in the Battle of Britain, in the later stages in particular. Best regards, JR.
