British grave at Arnhem (?)

Found this one in a late 50's book, unfortunately uncaptioned. I guess it's a British soldier's grave at Arnhem. Alas, I can not decipher the number on the board which says:

I wonder where the custom to plant dead men’s rifles in the ground originated… You see done by almost every European army, yet you never know why…
