Counter Admiral Walter Hennecke, Naval Commander Normandy, and Lieutenant General Karl-Wilhelm von Schlieben, commander of 709th Infantry Division after they had surrendered at Octeville, the center of German defence of “Fortress Cherbourg”. Actually they surrendered to Maj.Gen. Manton S. Eddy , CO of 9th US Infantry Division, and were taken to Gen. Collins at VII Corps’ headquarters about 20 miles south of Cherbourg. June 26, 1944.
