I’m researching my grandfather’s WWII service. In his discharge papers, it states that he served in the continental US for more 2 years and that he received the American Service medal but it does not provide a relevant service unit or state what he did. The only unit that is provided, the 742nd FA Bn, was not established until 1944 when he went into foreign service and I do know that he was a gun crewman for the 8 inch howitzer. Any advice on how to obtain more information or any general information about the coast artillery would be much appreciated. Thanks!

They are an interpretive site, and will have some information on how to proceed in your research
You could also start googling 8 inch howitzer, coast artillery and such, that will give you a lot of information, too
