Collapsed bridge

American troops survey the wreckage of the collapsed bridge over the Rhine river at Remagen, Germany; March 1945.

Apparently it was no big deal at the time. The Bn history (229th FA Bn) does not say when the Bn crossed the Rhine. It does mention some of our targets in support of the 6th Cav Grp on the east side of the Rhine as early as 17 March. No matter how I tweak my 96 year memory I can not remember if we crossed on the bridge or US army eng bridge along side. In any event the bridge collapsed afternoon of 17 March. I do remember how the bridge was protected by a big net across the river and boats.
