Death by Sniper

Paratroopers arrive at the spot where other members of their 101st Airborne Division unit were cut down by German snipers. This photo was taken near Carentan, south of Utah Beach on June 14, 1944. The trooper in the foreground was apparently killed by a single bullet that penetrated his helmet. (scanned by HOS Bandit)

I count three bodies. Did they manage to get the sniper or did he retreat?

Also, is this inside a yard/farm? There seem to be gates in the background?
