Eurovision Song Contest: Sir Terry Wogan may resign over bloc voting row
Terry Wogan has threatened to resign as commentator for the Eurovision Song Contest over an Eastern European bloc voting row.Wogan, whose sardonic commentaries have enlivened the competition for 35 years, said the event was “no longer a musical contest” and suggested that Western European countries should also consider pulling out.
His remarks came at the end of a contest that saw the Russian entrant, Dima Bilan, win the contest in the Serbian capital Belgrade thanks to the support of his Eastern European neighbours.
Wogan’s irritation has been fuelled by long-standing suggestions that the voting system is a fix with judges from different countries forming political alliances that overlook any possible musical merit.
The row has escalated recently, with claims that Eastern European countries have formed the musical equivalent of the Warsaw Pact to squeeze out their Western rivals.Eurovision song contest as seen some controvercial voting in recent times. So much so, that the British public has lost interest in the competition. However, there is a drive afoot to rekindle the UK’ interest reclaim the countries former promince in the competition.
