French soldiers burn their weapons

About 1.5 million french soldiers were captured by the Wehrmacht by the end of the surprisingly quick end of the german western campaign. By June 25th 1940, 01:35 am there was cease-fire...but no peace. The french soldiers on the picture however were convinced never to take a rifle in their hands again.

For what reason would the french burn their rifles in WW1?

The time is the key to this foto. If this is a world war 2, these are not french, but greek resistance fighters, because thei have some Gras rifles it that time.
