French WWI uniforms

I dunno about you, but it came to me as a shock when I first discovered that the French WWI uniforms consisted of a navy blue coat and bright red trousers. Before I saw part of Joyeux Noel, I only saw B&W photos of the French soldiers, so I was under the impression that their uniforms were olive drab, or something more practical, like the British uniforms.

IIRC uniform colours changed for the French over the course of the war. At the beginning of the war they were very bright and colourful, but being as at the time the battles the French were trying to fight had a great deal more to do with bayonets than rifles it probably didn’t make a lot of difference. Likewise once it degenerated into trench warfare - even a camouflaged head is too big a target unless an attack is going in, in which case you’ll be close enough to be spotted whatever you’re wearing anyway
