A picture of a fake tree stump that the Germans made to act as a lookout.
Obviously it was meant to blend in with all the other tree stumps that had been blown apart.
Looks like quite a novel idea; just don’t know how well it worked though.
I have actually seen one of these at the imperial war museum in London.
Okay that is a first. Very inventive. It would be pretty cool to see a photo of the above illustration.
The Tree stumps were also used by the British. They were often made of metal, although very thin similar to corrugated iron. Likewise they used periscopes inside them too, as they provided little cover from gun fire.
Not strictly on topic but still valid I feel was the use of mess tins by the ANZACs during the retreat from Gallipoli.
The rifles were secured to the parapit, then a mess tin and some weight was atached to the trigger. A second mess tin with a hole was suspended in such a way that the water would drain in to the lower mess tin.
And hey presto. As the Anzacs left empty trenches, the rifles would sporadically fire a single shot in the dark, as the trigger weight was reached.
