How would I go about looking up information on my Grandfather?

First off, great site!

Thank you for maintaining it and all the hard work that goes into it.

Got a question I thought you could point me in the right direction so I can start doing some research.

My Grandfather was in WWII, on the German side. He survived the war with a severed left arm which happened on the eastern front (what year I don’t know) from originally was a bullet wound but it got infected and he had to have his arm amputated. His name was Werner Gehrmann. He passed away about 15 years ago. I know he was in Italy for a while, but then was put in the eastern front somewhere in Russia. (I remember him singing old itailian love songs while he was working in is garden, when I was a little wee one) How would I go about finding out which unit he belonged to, where all he was and what he did?
Does anyone know where to start looking? or suggestions?

I have some picts of him and 2 really neat ww2 era books with what appears to be loaded with originals I will scan and upload here in the near future.

Hi fluffthunder,

Here is my search for information on my grandad.
At the bottom is a list of authorities I addressed.
Translate them to authorities in your country if possible.
The German archives shoud be no problem.
Especially the Federal archive in Berlin and the Landeshauptarchive in Brandenburg could be usefull.
