Human wave

Red Army human wave attack. There are numerous accounts from German and Finnish soldiers who witnessed Red Army human wave attacks. They have in common the complete disbelief that Soviet commanders cynically would waste their own men in meaningless frontal attacks, and the horrors of knowing the Soviet soldier willingly would let themselves be slaughtered.

Looks like infantry advancing across open ground of which there is lots in the former Soviet union - they are supported by tanks and you have artillery bursts in the back ground - indicating a combined arms assault or a staged one for film.

Either way when you have huge open areas sometimes the only way to attack is a frontal one and you use maximum force on a point to achieve a break through.
