Identify this movie

I used to watch a WW2 movie with my grandfather when I was little, and I loved it at the time and now I want to watch it again. I cannot for the life of me remember what it was called. Can someone help identify this movie for me?I watched this movie back in 1987 or so and the movie looked fairly old at that time so I am guessing it was made in the 60’s or prior. The movie is set in Europe somewhere, and is the Germans vs. the Americans. The 1st scene in the movie is a German tank is driving through a tunnel with train tracks and the Americans drop down on top of it and plant grenade on it. The movie is mostly about the Americans and they have a large group of tanks and are about to invade a broken down European city. The Americans believe the city is either empty of Germans or there is little resistance there. During the movie you also follow a German officer and you learn he is getting tired of the war, or getting tired of his fellow Germans, or does not want the Americans to get killed. In the end of the movie, the Americans are ready to move into the city but before they do they send a jeep with two guys into the city to see if there are any Germans in town. The German soldiers are all hiding waiting for an ambush and are instructed not to fire on the jeep so that the Americans think there is no Germans and will come into town with their guard down and be killed. The German officer that the movie has been following feels this is not good, and he opens fire on the jeep. He shoots near the jeep not at it so the Americans get scared and turn away. The jeep returns and tells the rest of the American tanks that there is a sizable German force occupying the town and we should proceed with caution. Some other faint memories of the movie include the German officer going into a wine cellar in the town the Germans occupy, also a scene in which the German officer is on “R and R” and he is having dinner and drinks in an Italian looking city, and he meets a woman.
I know this is pretty vague but hopefully someone recognizes this plot and can tell me the name of the movie so I can buy it. Please help me, or point me in the direction to get further assistance.

Thanks for your time,
D. S.

Nobody can help me? boooooooooo…

Was this movie in color or B/W? Also, can you remember any of the actors’ names?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_World_War_II_films
Might be useful?

Anything else you can remember…actors, who made the movie etc…

Perhaps i know which film you mean - was this also the film where Tiger Tanks were destroyed by the Americans by throwing fuel tons at them off a ridge? - No joke seriously, do you mean this film?

The movie is in color.
I can not remember any of the actors.
As for them dumping fuel on the tanks I don’t remember that but I don’t know for sure. I think in the movie the German officer is friends with a old man and his family that live in the broken down town that the Germans occupy. I believe this old man has a shop and in the basement of the shop is a wine cellar. I know this is super vague but thats why I need help identifying this movie. I believe the picture of the cover of the movie had a tank in the middle of it, and had the pictures of the faces of the main actors all around the tank.

I have looked over countless lists of movies, looked at lists of covers of movies and I don’t recognize any covers, or plots. If nobody here can help me (And I understand its hard to help me with so little info.) I guess I will just have to go on a WW2 movie watching rampage.

I’d be willing to bet the movie was Breakthrough (1981) sequel to the movie Cross of Iron with Richard Burton taking on the role of Steiner (James Coburn played Steiner in Cross of Iron). Also stars Rod Steiger, Robert Mitchum, Michael Parks, Helmut Griem, and Klaus Lowitsch (who also played in Cross of Iron as Steiner’s sidekick - Unteroffizier Krüger).

The details are close to the way you described it, except that the movie begins on the Russian Front where the Germans destroy a T-34 with explosives as it emerges from a train tunnel. The men are transferred to the Western Front where the plot develops close to the way you described it. Robert Mitchum and Michael Parks were the two Americans in the jeep from the scene you described.

Try renting Breakthrough and then let us know if this was the movie.
