Nice to see the old Scout scope. These were used in the Boer War for scouting, hence the name. AS i recall it has about a times 20 magnificiaton which is somewhat superior to the times 3 mounted on the rifle. A pair of G1098 binos would complete the picture - nice dog!

The same team who taught the ‘Marksmanship and Coaching course’ to me and other senior NCO’s was the same team that taught sniping.
The oldest sniping rifles they had were made at Lithgow SAF during WWII, being selected .303 " SMLEIIIs with heavy barrels added, some of the rifles had been made as standard SMLEIIIs long before WWII . Their scopes were WWI designs but built during WWII. These remained the standard Australian Infantry sniper rifle until the L4A2 7.62mm conversions also done down here at Lithgow.
They still had lots of .303 sniper ammunition for them, along with a lot of sniper 7.62 NATO.
There were a few historical examples of the P14 sniper as carried by our Independent Companies (Commando) in Timor at least during 1942,
but it was not ‘standard’ by then.
Both the III and the L4A2 were capable of doing head-shots out to 600 metres. We later adopted the Parker Hale item used by the Poms.
