I just finished this book and I loved it. Great detail of how hoorible life must have been on the U-Boats.
But,I really have some questions about the ending of the book. With all due respect for Commander Werner, but that escape sounds like a Holywood movie. It just seemed to ridiculous to be true, perhaps I’m wrong, just seemed far-fetched to me. I know many other’s have read it,I would like to know if anyone agrees or disagrees with me.
He does tend to big himself up a little - for instance, the commands he lists are accurate, but the impression he gives is that he was one of the very last surviving commanders. Checking through some more serious reference material makes it clear that there were rather more survivors, many with more experience than him.
I was also wishing there was some information on his life after his escape. I have checked things out, there doesn’t seem to be anything else on Commander Werner.Like, what did he do for a liiving after the war?
