Japan was damned lucky to get off as lightly as it did, and damned lucky to be opposed to foes as sensitive to casualties on both sides as Australia and the United Sates were. Japan was far more racist than either of these countries.
I doubt very seriously, had the tables been turned, that Japan would have troubled itself to ship 800,000 tons of emergency food to the US or Australia at the end of the war.
