(AP) Two captured Japanese submarines scuttled by the U.S. Navy just after World War II have been discovered in the Pacific Ocean south of Pearl Harbor.

And what happened to their crews? If it’s right after the war, did they just commit suicide… for what? What did they die for?

Deaf

I have not watched it too, unfortunatelly.
Hope they will repeat it someday.

What happened to their crews? Nothing. These submarines were among those captured tied up at various IJN bases in Japan or were among the few that surrendered on the high seas after being ordered to do so by the IJN.

No one committed suicide, no one died in the process.

The USN brought these subs to Hawaii, I believe they were towed the whole way, without any Japanese crewmen.

They were scuttled after being evaluated and to preclude the Soviets from asking the US to turn them over as war prizes.

I’m proud to say that my colleague Bob Hackett had a role in the Nat Geo television show about this finding. He’s a military history consultant of sorts (not sure of exact title) to the TV show’s production team.

By the way, he’s also one of the principle contributors over at the venerable http://www.combinedfleet.com
