komandos, it was not only a matter of rank if a soldier was issued with a pistol. Machine gunners had P-38’s, so did drivers.

Off the topic.I have a small dilemma.My question is that:
Could SS-Rottenfūhrer (a typical one from a normal infantry unit {SS}) use instead of MP-40/Karabiner 98k -Luger P08 pistol or Walther P38 with a holster? Could he possess it or he needed to be of a higher rank? Was SS-Rottenfūhrer allowed to use such pistols?Let’s say that my question is relating to 1941, when Germany invaded the USSR.
