Most Convincing War Movie

For any fans of the war film genre, Wolfgang Petersen’s 1982 film DAS BOOT was just digitally remastered for Blu-ray. I now own both the original and the new director’s cut. If you own, the original, I still recommend looking into it. If you own neither or haven’t seen it, do yourself a favor and watch the film. You won’t be disappointed. LA Times has called it “the most convincing war movie ever made.”

I suspect there’s at least a handful of fellow fans in here, but just in case you’re not familiar with the film, here’s a brief description:

Set in 1942 during World War Two’s Battle of the Atlantic, German subs are engaging English shipping vessels in hopes to dwindle the supplies & support. The Germans are severely outmatched by the English’s more advanced escorts, proving victory to be a difficult task. DAS BOOT focuses on the actions of one such U-Boat, but also delves deeper into the sociological and psychological implications of the U-Boat’s environment. This multi dimensional aspect of the film, coupled with the intensity of being confined to a submarine, is what makes it so remarkably intense and interesting. If you’re a fan of war films, or you consider yourself a film buff, Das Boot is a must-see. I mean, it hasn’t receive 6 Oscar nominations and decades of acclaim for no reason at all!

*And fyi, the Blu-ray extras are incredible. Bonus features include:

  • full commentary with Wolfgang Peters
  • extensive documentary footage from filming in 1981
  • overviews of the control and captain’s room, and then some.

Been to see the ‘Das Boot’ sets and show they put on at Warner World in Germany a few times.

Congratulations to mastercharles, or masterbator as I like to think of him, on the least convincing genuine post.

masterbator has been a busy little beaver posting this sincere crap in various forums, presumably to boost sales of the Blu-ray version of Das Boot. Here are a few examples of his stunningly original work on other forums. I can’t be bothered posting links to all the other versions as he’s already wasted enough bandwidth on WWII in Color.

And so, as the sun sets in the west, we see masterbator dribble off into the sunset, never to post here again.

I think it only appropriate that the august body of our membership nominate mister mastergatorbator for a Peabody award. Such depth, and versatility in writing is not often in these days to be found. This Author is a must for Oprah’s literary club! .

Having carefully avoided Oprah (along with other daytime television which, involuntarily, I have seen screened only in doctors’, dentists’ and hospital waiting rooms with the sound turned inaudibly, and thankfully, down along with Dr Phil and other programs where fat and largely toothless harridans think that the solution to their fat and largely toothless husbands’ surprisingly successful infidelity is to take counsel from an audience of fat and largely toothless strangers who have torn themselves away from improving their trailers to proffer their accumulated wisdom and venom) I am unsure whether you are talking about a club in the nature of a society or, were it left to me, a cudgel.

Oprah does have some type of book society, but having seen parts of her shows, I prefer your definition. (particularly in the case of not really a Dr. Phil )
