New guy

What do you guys think of this, the post seems half way legit, but his profile home page shows a commercial marketing link to a sales site from which he has taken his user name, and his I.P. is located in China.

A Chinese intelligence rookie gathering information, maybe?

He could be a spammer, but it’s probably an interesting topic for some which might generate a bit of discussion, if one ignores the essential idiocy of America committing economic and social suicide by invading China and thus ending American civilisation within a few weeks by depriving WalMart, Home Depot, etc of stock from China.

I’d let it run unless it becomes obvious spamming, or trolling.

Actually, given America’s idiocy in various military excursions since WWII, ably infected by my current reading on MacArthur, Truman and sundry American figures wanting to contain Chinese communism in the late 1940s - 1950s by possibly military action, maybe it’s not an entirely idiotic topic. :frowning:

Nah, their internet rookies wouldn’t waste time here. They’d be set a test like penetrating the CIA’s or Microsoft’s computer systems, which could easily be marked by their teachers who’ve already done it.

Agreed, Spammers don’t generally make involved, and lengthy posts, and as RS* said, it is an interesting topic, and we could use a bit of traffic things have been mighty slow except for the profile spammers, and even they have dropped off in the past week. Maybe we’re part of the Asian cyber espionage/ hacker academy syllabus… Should we feel Honored?

If I had the proper magic wand, I would have just deleted the home page link, and cautioned him/her.

We need more than traffic.

I used Google to try to find something I think I posted on this forum a fair while back. I found interesting and informed discussions about various war topics, but over the past couple of years we’ve drifted off into trivia like whether Spam is a food or not.

Where did we go wrong?

Some, probably a lot, of it had to do with losing some knowledgeable members.

I think also the lack of new members meant that some of us, certainly me, became a bit repetitive or narrow in our focus.

I think also that some of us, certainly me, failed to add new material because we weren’t being challenged by new members.

We also got a bit combative with various ****wits and trolls who rightly deserved a belting, but maybe this discouraged lurkers from joining.

Whatever the reasons for traffic dropping off, we need to do something to reinvigorate the site so that it goes beyond mostly mod and moron posts (moron posts generally aren’t posts by mods :D) as it’s been on its deathbed for a year or three.
