Operation Jubilee

The 19th is the anniversary of Op JUBILEE. Also knows as Dieppe.

Any thoughts on whether or not this Op was worthwhile in the allied war effort, or was it a flawed and misconceived plan from the start.

For one, using Tanks on shingle beaches is never recommended.

Went for partly justified - it helped the British develop the techniques they used so succesfully in Normandy, but I doubt the guys trying to coax Cromwells over shingle would agree with me.

If we hadnt found out that tanks and shingle dont mix at Dieppe, then what would have happend with overlord?

The strange thing is, why didnt people realise that Tanks and shingle dont mix?

The RAF also lost a lot of ac over Dieppe.

A short precis of the Op can be found here:

Short correction. Dieppe marked the first use I believe of the New Churchill, a tank that would go onto become an awesome beast.

The Crocodille being the most famous but the favourite of mine is the AVRE:

Operation Jubilee was ill plotted and implemented terribly. The Raid on Dieppe is considered a diaster because 4,384 of the 6,086 who made it ashore were killed, wounded or captured. It was very badly executed in my opinion, with losses like that.

Did you vote then?

Yes I did

Weren’t quite a few of the Churchill “funnies” termed AVRE’s, even without the 290mm beast? What was it called again… Petard mortar?

EDIT: Silly me - there’s text below the pictures and it is a Petard mortar. That’s quite some model. Makes me wish I was that good. All my Airfix as a kid ended up having more glue than plastic…

Was there any other way to put it?
